After the Presidential and National Assembly elections, some analyst suggest that President Buhari is now the most powerful leader Nigeria has had since the return to democratic rule in 1999.
They base their analysis on the fact that the contending forces that have been deciding who eventually become President since that time was in open opposition to the President’s second term ambition, choosing instead to support the candidacy of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, who contested under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Despite the huge opposition and the mountain Buhari had to climb, the President eventually won a second term in office, thereby not making him beholden to these political gladiators.
One of such persons is former President Olusegun Obasanjo. OBJ, as he is fondly called by his admirers, is one of the most vocal opponents of Buhari in the last year, the former President, though supported Buhari’s bid to the Presidency four years ago, he has since turned his back on his former Army colleague and insists that president is not fit to hold office following his poor performance in the last four years.
Obasanjo has remained untouchable since leaving office in 2007 but it now appears that his invincibility could be shattered in Buhari’s second term in office and it seems the President his ready for a fight.
Recently, President Buhari suggested that he is keen to open an investigation into the $16 Billion spent on Power during Obasanjo’s administration, Buhari insists that the despite the huge amount of money spent on improving power supply, there is no justifiable change in the sector.
“The PDP still owes Nigerians explanation on how it spent the humongous resources that accrued to the country from oil sales between 1999 and 2014.
“They said they spent $16 billion on energy, but where is the electricity? The irresponsible expense of that period has not been explained, and Nigerians merit an answer on that terrible mismanagement of the country,” Buhari said.

The bulk of that money was spent during the administration of Obasanjo and Buhari is believed to be keen on getting to the bottom of the situation.
Some also suggest that Buhari is looking to pay back Obasanjo for all the antagonistic comments he has made about his administration in the last year, a situation that could see the former President and his allies behind bars.
